No 97: I don't want to be a millionaire any more :-(

HEARD the story about this man, a millionaire who is giving away all of his money because he is unhappy?

This includes the house you can see here, which is worth £1.4 million.

His name is Karl Radeber, he comes from Austria, and he is giving away his wealth of £3 million. Not to you and I unfortunately, but to charities that he has started up.

Read all about it in this Daily Telegraph article.

  1. If I was him I would think twice before giving any money to charities because often money go in someones pocket rather than people who need help.
Back in 1990s in Russia it was very popular method of crimilal organisations of making money.
Recently there was a scandal in papers about one charity(cant remember its name) which was sending money aid to Kenya for quete a long time and in fact all money was going to local rebels, who were buying weapons on it. I dont mean that charity is bad , I mean that if you want to help someone in poor countries it is more likely that they will get your help if you send it in the form of something else than money, like clothes medicine animals...etc. When I was studying in Ireland we all(students)donated some money to a charity in order to buy a cow and send it to Africa and this is the example of what charity should be- you dont send money to some place where you cant control what they are spending on.

  2. Yes certainly true you should be careful with which charities you give your money too - see posts 81 to 83 about Kiva, which although seems a respectable charity, does not do quite what it says.

This is a recent story questions what happened to some of the money given to Live Aid in 1985 (a huge worldwide concert). There are claims some of it got spent on weapons

This is why this man is giving his money to charities that he set up himself - that way he can check what happens to it!
